I'm very sympathetic to the idea that it was Israel rather than oil. But one fly in the ointment that really confuses me is: _Iran._ the idea that the Iraqis were going to give weapons to Hamas, Palestine, Hezbollah or anything else makes very little sense because those are all Shia Iranian aligned groups. Saddam Hussein may not have like Israel but he certainly hated Iran a hell of a lot more. Considering that the US toppling of his regime resulted in a role reversal where the Shia minority took control in Iraq and thus made it into an Iranian Alliance country, are the Israelis actually better off now than they were in 2003, just from a pure geopolitical standpoint? It's not a rhetorical question, I'm genuinely curious. The Iraq of today is nominally aligned with their enemies but also a significantly weaker and more destabilized country, who came out on top here? Iran or Israel. I can't imagine that the Israelis would have expected anything else, because I don't think that they are nearly as stupid as americnat Liberals/Neocons to believe that we were ever going to "install democracy" or anything there.
